Are Haitians on Labadee authentic or just paid to act poor?

I was on the Royal Caribbiean Crusie over the summer. The last island we stopped at was Haiti Labadee. It appears that Royal Caribbian is getting the all the profit. My question is that are the Haitians on the island acual locals or just people that Royal Caribbiean pay to act poor and dirty. On the bayside of the island, it is basically a water park. But in the back, there is a market place where the "locals" sell their "handmade" goods. I dont even think that anything there is hand carved or anything. I bought a walking cane made to look handmade. ITS ALL ONE BIG SCAM!!
